Here is a little Q&A we did with Mary, enjoy!
How did you get in to photography?
I got into photography because of my love of great photography and portraits of my loved ones. Jamie Hayes, my business partner, was actually my very own bridal portrait photographer when I got married many, many years ago. I was not one that felt very comfortable in front of the camera and I was so nervous that day. When we arrived Jamie greeted me and immediately made me feel at ease. I had a great time during the entire session and actually LOVED the pictures of myself! I knew right there and then that if I was ever blessed with children that he would be our photographer. When our daughter was born I looked Jamie up and he had just opened his own studio. We had her photographed for the first year and by her 12 month portrait session Jamie and I decided to work together. I actually started out working behind the scenes but eventually started photographing more and more. I fell in love with the idea of creating portraits and wedding images for our clients. I became absolutely passionate to excel at the art of photography and in a very short time earned both my Master and Craftsmen of Photography. It all happened very fast but here we are 21 years later and it was truly the best decision I ever made.
What is your favorite part of a wedding?
I truly love weddings, I love all of it. I love to see the bride getting zipped into the gown and the groom seeing her for the first time. I love creating portraits of family and friends celebrating together and beautiful images of the love between the bride and groom, I really love it all. But, I my absolute favorite moment is the father/daughter dance. There is something about that moment when a daddy holds his little girl and dances with her that just makes me catch my breath. For me it is one of the most emotional moments of the whole day.
Where do you find inspiration?
The majority of my inspiration comes from the couple themselves. Every single couple is different and their approach, vision and desires for their wedding and wedding day photography are absolutely unique to them. I love to chat with them about how they met, how they became engaged, what their favorite things to do together are, etc. I love to watch them interact with each other and most importantly listen to them and their plans for their wedding day. I consider each couple and their personalities and that is how I decide to approach their wedding day and how it will be documented.
What is your favorite spot at Dover Hall for photos?
Choosing one spot at Dover Hall is like choosing your favorite child! That is a really hard question! But, if you are twisting my arm and making me choose I love to photograph in the formal living room at the front of the house. This room is just perfect for any type of portraits. The natural light is stunning, the furnishings are just over the moon beautiful and it has the most beautiful palette of colors. It is perfect for family portraits or bridal portraits or even the bride and groom together. It is a don't miss spot at Dover Hall!
Do you have any advice for future brides?
My very favorite piece of advice for all brides and grooms is really, really, really like your vendors. You are investing your entire wedding day to these people and you need to trust them and like them. We all understand that there are budgets to consider but trust me feeling 100% comfortable with your wedding vendors and knowing that they are going to deliver exactly what you expect is the best feeling in the world. I have heard more sad stories from couples that went with a cheaper planner, or less expensive photographer to save money but never fully trusted them or felt totally comfortable with them. Unfortunately this creates an uneasiness during the entire process and the couple can never quite relax and enjoy everything because the trust is just not there. You have to spend a lot of time with your wedding vendors and you are trusting us to fulfill every single one of you wedding dreams, so trust your gut and go with the ones that you really truly like!
