On February 5th, Dover Hall was more than a venue—it was the stage for an unforgettable evening where history, leadership, and hospitality converged. Virginia House Speaker Don Scott’s Black & White Gala brought together lawmakers, policy advocates, and distinguished guests for a much-needed moment of camaraderie amid Virginia’s legislative session.
Walking through the grand estate, you could feel the energy. The crackle of fireplaces, the clinking of glasses, and the hum of meaningful conversations filled the air. It wasn’t just an event—it was a rare bipartisan pause, a chance to exhale, recharge, and enjoy the company of friends and colleagues before returning to the demands of the session.
A Room Full of Virginia’s Leaders
The guest list read like a who’s who of Virginia leadership. Governor Glenn Youngkin, former Governor L. Douglas Wilder, Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, and Congressman Bobby Scott were just a few of the esteemed attendees. State Senators L. Louise Lucas, Mamie Locke, and Aaron Rouse joined the celebration, alongside leaders from Virginia’s HBCUs—including Virginia State President Dr. Makola Abdullah and Hampton University President Darrell Williams. Richmond Mayor Danny Avula and former Mayor Levar Stoney were also present. Dover Hall has always been a place where tradition meets modern luxury, and this evening was no exception.

A Culinary Showcase
Guests were treated to a culinary journey from VRLTA's 2023 Chef of the Year, Leah Randolph and her team that celebrated the bold flavors of the South and the refined elegance of fine dining. Passed canapés set the tone—Creole Crab Cakes with sambal aioli, Maine Lobster Rolls on toasted brioche, and Housemade Edwards Ham Biscuits with apple butter and whole-grain mustard. The Fried Green Tomatoes with pimento cheese were a crowd favorite, blending rich Southern heritage with a touch of sophistication.
Dinner stations delivered indulgent flavors at every turn. Seared Beef Tenderloin with horseradish cream offered melt-in-your-mouth perfection, while the Shrimp & Grits with Cajun shrimp, bacon lardons, and blistered tomatoes were a nod to classic Lowcountry cuisine. The Truffle Mac & Cheese, decadent with truffle cheddar béchamel, was the kind of comfort food that leaves guests lingering at the station for seconds.
And of course, Dover Hall’s own 7 Lady Vineyards wines were poured throughout the evening. Our Brut Reserve and Brut Rosé added the perfect celebratory touch, alongside a carefully curated selection of craft cocktails, including Espresso Martinis and Brown Sugar Old Fashions.
More Than a Gala—An Experience
The evening didn’t end when the last toast was made. Several distinguished guests retired to Dover Hall’s ten luxurious en suite bedrooms, where they were welcomed with plush accommodations and the quiet grandeur of the estate at night. Morning arrived with the comforting aroma of a Chef’s Breakfast—a final moment of award-winning hospitality before they returned to their work shaping Virginia’s future.
